The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club history in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
