Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other marked cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations show the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the attack left him speechless and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
