Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
