Sunday morning, the child, named Hinata Goto, was nearing the end of the moving walkway at a Hokkaido resort when he lost his balance. His right arm became ensnared in the equipment.
The travelator featured a safety mechanism, but it did not trigger. The conveyor only halted when the boy's mother pressed the stop control.
First responders spent 40 minutes dismantling part of the travelator to rescue the boy, who by then had become unresponsive. He was pronounced dead later at the hospital.
Questions About Equipment Safety
Staff at the resort indicated that the travelator's safety mechanism, which should stop operations if it detected a trapped object, had been tested previously that day.
Investigators are looking into the accident to assess whether there was any negligence, such as in the production and servicing of the travelator.
