The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the video.

We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
