Thrice-crowned NBA MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "devastating" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets lost 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The star player injured himself late in the first half during an unintentional coming together with team-mate Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the big man, and he immediately fell to the ground clutching his leg.

The veteran player, that leads the NBA season in boards and dimes, had 21 points and eight dimes in the contest before incurring the setback.

The player is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday to determine the extent of the issue.

"Right away, Jokic realized there was a problem," stated Denver head coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever who is injured, that's difficult, particularly a player as important as he is. We'll find out more on Tuesday."

"We'll move on together. Of course, currently, I am focused about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of facing something like that."
