The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Perpetrator.

Two students who died in the recent tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the sole person questioned in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also posted sympathies online, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

Nine more persons were hurt in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man detained in a raid at a Hampton Inn about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“There is a killer at large,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our community”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a authority reported to the Associated Press.

Police that entered the lodging recovered two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was discharged from care, said the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

A private school, a private academy in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Additional Memorials

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his promising future.”

Wider Picture

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
