The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
