The retail giant Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon TCG Products
As a notable development, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, according to a company memo shared with employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video received significant criticism for permitting the large-scale transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. However, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. What exactly counts as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is based on each visit, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
To most players, this approach might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.
Certain buyers aim to resell sealed items at a markup, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling for over $800 on various platforms.
Upcoming Releases
This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the ongoing demand and potential reseller attention.
With any luck, the retail limits will curb mass buying and improve availability for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
