Moments before his name was called, a anxious thought raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He revealed he was thinking, "Not an F1 driver again."

"This has been a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and perhaps we can capitalize on that."

In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The result was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to savor a blockbuster evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned the top squad.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Choosing not to stay for the official reception, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to Miami.

"I've had a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "My plan is for a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to slow down, notwithstanding achieving the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a more to give in me," he asserted.

"Further big titles, tour championships, international events, that's great. But as long as you feel like you can keep progressing and have the drive, that's the key."

Squad Celebration

At the same time, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also praised golf's remarkable night and his close friend's award.

"Those are the moments that will live with us for all time so to get the public's recognition for that is really cool," he stated. "Seeing Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Next Targets

Fleetwood hopes to finally win his maiden major next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "Provided that you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to improve," Fleetwood explained.

United Hopes

Before McIlroy left, a last query arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be convinced to do it again after his new triumphs?

"If they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a grin. "There is progress. There's a little bit of hope around."

After a remarkable year, it's little surprise that Rory McIlroy is focusing on the bright side.
