The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, was not quick to announce this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
