Travel Shares Slump during Diplomatic Rift with Beijing
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is facing an intensifying political tension with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's tourism and consumer companies have fallen significantly after China recommended its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.
This action by Beijing heightened a political dispute that was triggered by statements from Tokyo's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of sending forces in the case of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation triggered a surge of selling across Japanese tourism-related shares.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator stock fell by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3%
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75 percent
"The ongoing tension over Taiwan and China's travel warning advising against visits to Japan introduces near-term challenges for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making department stores, luxury retail, and tourism services particularly vulnerable."
GDP Contraction Details
Japan's gross domestic product fell by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' exports were affected by tariffs imposed by the United States recently.
Exports were a major driver of the decline, falling by 1.2% compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two nations reached a trade agreement.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product shrank by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was stable in the first half of this year and the latest GDP data showed that momentum is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has recently recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, reducing tariffs on food imports including beef, tomatoes, beverages and fruits amid increasing concerns about rising costs.
