The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.

The president expressed that the team is now refining the project with a revised approach, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the full content from the president's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. After a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter field is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all excited to continue seeing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a community playtest. Initially, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, gamble everything, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."

The game lacks an confirmed debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can expect more updates as development continues.
