The former Liverpool manager says a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback is something that could happen. Klopp, post a game-changing nine-season tenure featuring a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait since 1990, currently occupies roles in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the Premier League under Arne Slot, but many fans who adore the manager would be thrilled by the idea that he might come back one day. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with Steven Bartlett: “I stated I won't manage another team on English soil. Therefore should it be the Reds...yeah. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“At 58 years old, so I could make the decision down the line, I don’t know. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on the specific conditions would need to occur to tempt his return to the dugout, he revealed he was not instantly drawn toward coming back. “It's unclear to me, My present work fulfills me,” he said. “I don't crave being a coach; No desire to be under bad weather for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to press conferences four times, three times a week or constant media duties a week.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, but sitting in a restaurant alongside the squad enjoying conversation, is pleasant. With many victories meaning regularly positive atmosphere in the building. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh in my ear for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly of the current boss, praising him for the tweaks that won the league last campaign. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches in every contest after a summer spending spree, but he rubbished the notion of it representing the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker such as Wirtz, critics will regret if spoken against. An outstanding player. The French striker, superb talent. It’s a really good well-judged squad. Fans shouldn't fret about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally about the death of the Portuguese star, a 2020 acquisition in 2020, and its impact for the team. The Portugal international was killed in a car crash with his brother recently.
“Who can fill the void of somebody like Diogo? It’s not about his footballing ability, his personality mattered. It's hard to picture the dressing room absent his presence. I still cannot speak properly regarding this. A profound tragedy for his teammates also. No one within the club will ever use it as an excuse though it's a fact. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Handling this emotionally is difficult. Unbearable.”
