The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
