Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them relive a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
