The daughter of previous South African Leader Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror allegations at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over remarks she published on online platforms several years back during violent unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.

A seven-day period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, caused at least 300 dead and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been accused of fuelling this unrest and is charged with accusations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Legal Matter

The unrest were focused in the areas of Gauteng and KZN and followed the previous president's apprehension for ignoring a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an inquiry into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.

The defendant has repeatedly refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative in the past describing the state's evidence as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly said the accusations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her parent after he founded his own party and ran against the ruling party.

This was supported by the foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and kinship targeting" against the former president and his relatives.

A few of supporters from her political organization, the political party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other party leaders were present at the proceedings inside.

Her legal team has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling evidence for a criminal finding.
