New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
