Meghan Markle has alleged that the newspaper crossed "clear ethical boundaries" by reporting from the hospital room of her father, from whom she is estranged, after his assertions that he had not received his daughter's messages.

A Public Appeal and a Private Struggle

Thomas Markle appealed to Meghan to see him in a weekend interview, following having major surgery abroad.

However, a representative for Meghan stated that she had been trying to contact her father and censured the publication's conduct.

"Considering a journalist from the outlet has remained at her father’s side throughout, publicizing each exchange and breaching obvious ethical boundaries, it has been extremely hard for the duchess to contact her father privately, notwithstanding her attempts over the past few days," the representative stated. "With the support of reliable and trusted associates, her correspondence is now safely in his hands."

Outlet's Denial

A representative for the parent company of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday rejected any ethical breach and said that Mr. Markle was a longtime acquaintance of the reporter who interviewed him.

"After Thomas Markle was taken ill in the Philippines he contacted Caroline Graham and requested she travel to be with him," said the spokesman. "Not only is she a journalist, she has been a friend to Mr Markle since 2018. She has been with Mr Markle in hospital every day, offering him care and support."

The company representative continued, "The claim is completely false that each interaction has been publicized, and the allegation that ethical boundaries were breached is demonstrably false and vehemently denied."

Background of Estrangement

The row follows a period of difficulty in which Meghan is reported to have been trying to contact her father. Her representatives claim they had faced challenges to locate him or find a way to communicate with him privately.

Meghan has been estranged from her father since her wedding, when she married Prince Harry. The father-daughter bond soured further after a personal letter she wrote to him, parts of which were published in the Mail on Sunday, which she said "marked the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation."

Forthcoming Court Case

This incident comes weeks before the Duke of Sussex is due to begin a legal case against the owner of the Daily Mail over allegations of unlawful information gathering.

In that trial, scheduled for next month, the publisher is being sued by Prince Harry and a group of high-profile individuals. The plaintiffs contend the newspaper group engaged in illegal practices. The publisher strongly disputes all allegations.
