Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks said that an late session of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are striving to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A lasting truce
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return not a single person will feel safe."

"Once we see all home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, embracing, especially my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
