Powerful cold-season gusts brought walls down onto fragile tents housing Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing at least 4 people. These deaths highlights the perilous living conditions that persist after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers Little Relief from Severe Weather

While a truce has been active since last fall, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the adequate shelter necessary to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, reported on this week that the deceased were two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated a family member after the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 people of a one household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than five others were hurt in the event.

Family members on that day began removing the debris that had entombed their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation items throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of Palestinians reside in makeshift tents because their houses were reduced to ruins during the war. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, reports more than four hundred and forty people have been killed by Israeli fire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire began. The authority keeps detailed casualty data that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on that day that no fewer than one hundred minors under the age of 18 – sixty boys and 40 females – had been lost their lives since the ceasefire began because of armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of bullets. Those figures, he said, represented cases where enough information had been compiled to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he said.

Third Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of over 2 million individuals has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season. It’s the 3rd cold season since the war involving Israel and Hamas started on 7 October 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered around twelve hundred people and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
