Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Between Music Generations

Marking two decades after the legendary game debuted in North America, offering everyday gamers the tools to become rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who has nailed the epic four-minute guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow coloured notes scrolling down the display in time with a song. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, producing the feel of an authentic performance.

Harmonix previously experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the foundations for a surprising billion-dollar franchise which made a remarkable influence for many musicians featured, showcasing decades-old bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early budgetary hurdles in securing the songs – despite the fact initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. But once Guitar Hero took off, and record sales and radio play increased, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for exposing their kids to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Irish group one featured act included Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game brought older hits to the forefront: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, new demographic. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, however once it got featured on the game young people were finding it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ tag. It gave all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the band's debut album remained not available stateside, meaning the game was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late during travel, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles Enduring Impact

Music's heavyweight names soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated game editions centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band more money compared to their records. It moved more than half a million copies upon release, and demand for their songs saw an increase significantly at a time as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Recently, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar gameplay but an array of personalization features. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention performed at increased tempo and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

The band previously wrapped up a successful tour when their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label informing us that our records were moving like crazy,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of top acts at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it has threatened to overshadow everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact from the Plastic Guitar

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to do it”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles like the fan project and newer releases have kept the scene alive, with set to be a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace another game in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed such titles could be similar to sports games where you can releases,” he remarks. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue with new generations.”
