Ghostface Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that three different characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
