Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after the ex-president charged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in military or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and defend this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The clip reportedly prompt a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats released a combined declaration denouncing the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our nation with exceptional national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical online messages and recant his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Representatives' Strong Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also published a statement.
"We identify as former service members and security experts who care for this country and swore an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "All citizens must unite and censure the former president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Political Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of Congress advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the language and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative said. "There are current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
