Democrat Eileen Higgins Voted In as Inaugural Democrat Mayor of the City of Miami in 30 Years.

Democrat Eileen Higgins has secured victory in the election to lead Miami in Florida, marking the initial instance a member of her party has done so in almost three decades.

A one-time commissioner, Higgins secured the runoff victory by garnering 59% of the ballots, overcoming her Republican competitor Emilio Gonzalez, who was supported by Donald Trump and received nearly 41% of the vote, according to election data.

"Miami chose a fresh course... you chose competence over chaos," remarked the mayor-elect to supporters.

Higgins' win extends a string of latest Democratic victories.

A Historic Achievement on Various Counts

With her victory, Higgins, sixty-one, also is now the inaugural female to be chosen as mayor, as noted by media outlets.

Higgins said her victory "heralds the commencement of the work ahead" and pledged to confront the problems Miami is grappling with.

"I will govern a city that serves every citizen," she noted.

Campaign Focus and Difference with the Administration

Focusing her campaign on issues including immigration and housing affordability, she worked to distinguish her governing approach against that of Trump.

In a recent interview, Higgins remarked: "He [Trump] and I have very different points of view on how we should serve our citizens, a significant number of whom are foreign-born."

During the Miami mayoral debate, she described the president's immigration enforcement "inhumane and cruel."

She vowed to cooperate with the current administration on matters where they can find common ground, but "when we disagree, I'll speak out," she said.

Support and the Road to Victory

Although the election was officially without party labels, Higgins earned the endorsement of multiple influential Democrats, including one-time secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Alongside backing from Trump, Gonzalez was also backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Higgins now succeeds former mayor Francis Suarez, who made a short-lived bid for the presidential nomination as a Republican.

Amid a Larger Wave

Leading up to Higgins' win, the Democratic Party secured significant wins in the first major elections of the current administration recently.
