Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
