Catherine's Annual Festive Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers

Her Royal Highness has organised her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will listen to a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to young musicians backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
