California is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, no portion of California is experiencing drought conditions. This milestone follows grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated wildfire risks and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
A Chart Reveals No Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from a period of significant storms that helped fill major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a weather expert.
After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons
The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
Until late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were considered experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 washed away those remaining dry spots.
The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern
But, hydrologists note that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which provides a significant portion of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts have emphasized that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the coming year.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor is entirely green, the focus now shifts to maintaining this precious water balance throughout the coming seasons.
