Britain Set to Use Frozen Russia's Holdings to Finance Ukraine's Military Campaign
The British government is prepared to move forward with utilizing the entire amount of immobilized Russia's assets to bolster Ukraine's defense operations, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a collective announcement, the heads of state of the Britain, the French Republic, and Germany emphasized that this coordinated action would escalate tension on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and urge the Russian Federation to come to the table.
They clarified that the move would be carried out in strong partnership with the United States.
United Kingdom restrictions have blocked more than £25bn of Russian assets since Moscow began its full-scale invasion against the Ukrainian nation in 2022. Yet, until now, funds allocated to Ukraine using Russian assets had only been sourced from profits and interest earned on them.
Sir Keir told President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were in agreement in their desire to drive progress toward utilizing the total worth of the seized Russian sovereign holdings to halt hostilities.
He stated that more sanctions soon would apply more pressure on the Russian government.
This declaration is subsequent to European leaders met in Copenhagen recently to debate using seized Russia's funds for a 140-billion-euro credit to Ukraine.
Last month, President Donald Trump encouraged international partners to seize or employ frozen Russia's holdings, as reported by news outlets.
The total of frozen Russian holdings in the European Union is estimated to be approximately €211bn.
President Zelensky urges UK's Sir Keir Starmer to take part in the PURL programme
Russia launched large-scale aerial attacks throughout the Ukrainian territory on Friday, causing blackouts in many areas of Ukraine's capital, the city, and eight other regions.
Two people were fatally injured and no fewer than 20 people were hurt in the strike, Ukrainian officials reported.
In a message on social media following the attack, Zelensky wrote that the cynical and calculated attack focused on civilian and energy infrastructure.
"What's needed is not mere statements but decisive action - from the US, Europe, and the seven nations - in providing air defence systems and enforcing penalties," he wrote.
"All penalty impositions diminishes Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky wrote, in a additional update.
Additionally that day, Zelensky informed the press he would urge Sir Keir to enter the PURL programme, under which Nato countries buy weapons from the US to give to the Ukrainian forces.
While applauding the United Kingdom's firm backing for Kyiv, he noted it should indicate firmly that it would take part in the program, as well as apply additional measures on Russia.
