Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
âIt feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,â noted Cappa. âThe attitude is that we have to know weâre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.â
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
